Cyclones vs Archers

Filed under: Match Reports — James Wilcox at 4:53 pm on Friday, November 25, 2016

Cardiff City held an inter-club match for the first time since 2014; a great sign of the growth from all of the hard work put into the club over the last few years. We had lots of new players making their league debuts, including some students from the new Cardiff Met team! It was a close affair, with the score remaining tight for much of the game, but Cyclones managed to edge ahead in the second half to claim victory from a hard-fought match.

MVP for Archers was given to Tom Hussey, Cardiff Met, who scored 2 goals on his league debut, whilst MVP for Cyclones went to Julie Prosser. Angharad Griffiths, also making a league debut, scored her first goal, and special mention to Katie Peterson who earned two goals for Cyclones. Final score, 15-11.

Snap Shot Social

We organised our famous Snap Shot Social last weekend. It’s basically a pub crawl and you’re split in to teams to complete a number of photo challenges! We won’t put them all here, but here is one from the start of the evening when we were all looking reasonably respectable. Why not come along and get involved with our next social event?!

Cardiff Beginners Tournament 2016

Filed under: News — James Wilcox at 2:53 pm on Thursday, October 27, 2016

We entered two teams to this event: Cardiff City and Cardiff Met. There were more teams from Cardiff University, Raptors, and other English universities: Exeter, Bristol, Southampton, Reading, Manchester, and Birmingham. A total of 18 teams participated and both of our teams got off to flying starts in their group stages. By the afternoon our teams were sitting towards the top of their groups and entered the knockout phases. Cardiff Met made a better show of it, reaching the third place play-off and missing out to end the day in 4th. Cardiff City were just behind in 6th place. We had 20 players enjoying the day, with 11 of them being completely new to korfball just weeks before! Very well played by all and it looks like our newbies have lots of potential!

New Season Begins in Style

Filed under: News — James Wilcox at 2:47 pm on Thursday, October 27, 2016

Cardiff City have two teams entered into the Welsh National Korfball League for the 2016/17 season. Some of our members, studying at Cardiff Metropolitan University, have established a new student team; they will be competing in BUCS this season and to accommodate them we have entered an additional team this season: Cardiff City Archers. Our other team Cardiff City Cyclones, have already begun their title defence with a comprehensive victory over Cardiff University 2.

The first games of the season took place at Cardiff City House of Sport, where Cardiff University 1 earned their first victory over Raptors 2. Cyclones followed this up by playing their second team and demonstrating why the club is the defending Welsh League Champions. At half-time the score was 20-3 in favour of the Cyclones. A flurry of changes in the second half slowed the scoring and the match ended 33-4.

Team Sheet: Lenneke van der Linden (7), James Wilcox (7), Jack Mitchell (6), Zoe Rose (4), Alice Hunter (2), Alec Care (2), Bivin Mathew (2), Edward Regan (2), Anna Burt (1), Nicky Beddows, Hayley Bondy.

Cardiff Tournament

Filed under: News — James Wilcox at 12:47 pm on Friday, October 30, 2015

Cardiff City took part in the annual beginners’ tournament at Cardiff University, alongside Raptors and teams from Nottingham, Reading, Birmingham, Oxford, Southampton, Bristol, and Exeter. The group stage took place in the morning with City seeing off Cardiff University, Nottingham, and Birmingham, however we lost out to Raptors which resulted in three teams tied at the top of the group. A penalty shoot-out between Raptors, Cardiff University, and Cardiff City would decide the group. With some sharp shooting from our new players, Daniel Weaver secured top spot for Cardiff City!

In the afternoon we went on to win our quarterfinal and reached a semi-final encounter with Southampton. It was a close match in which we went 2-0 down initially but we managed to claw it back and squeeze into the final! Lo and behold we were faced with Raptors again for an all Cardiff final! The game was competitive and thoroughly enjoyed by all, especially the new players, but in the end the rampant Raptors edged it with a 5-4 win.

Top of the League!

Next up in the Welsh Korfball League was the unknown quantity of Cardiff University 3. So early in the season there were plenty of eager players who were extremely unpredictable in their style of play. There were four debuts for Cardiff City as our new blood got stuck into the action!

The match saw goals for Jon and Dan on their debuts and it was a scrappy start with the students popping a few goals in during the confusion. City managed to get control though and we ended up winning comfortably 14-6! This win, with other results from that weekend, means that Cardiff City go top of the Welsh League!

Back to Winning Ways

Cardiff City opened the Welsh League season by locking horns with the reigning champions, Cardiff University 1. The students have won the league for the last two seasons running, bringing their total to four Welsh League titles on a par with the four won by Cardiff City.

Cardiff University 1 fielded a talented team comprised of some newly selected Welsh international players in Rebecca Fitch, Niamh Sully, and Leo Comerford but we were up for a fight!

Our team had been training together over the summer, with newly returned head coach James Wilcox, and the squad fielded current and previous Welsh internationals, seasoned Cardiff City veterans, and a new face!

Cardiff City leapt in to the lead when the game began, and despite the whole match being a fairly low scoring affair, managed to extend a 6-2 lead by half-time. The students looked like mounting a comeback, when they brought it back to 6-4 early in the second half, but the experience of the Cardiff City players meant they were able to hold out see out the game without any major dramas. Every single player in the Cardiff City team contributed with goals to the 11-5 victory – the first time Cardiff City beat Cardiff University 1 since the end of the 2012-13 season!

Next week Cardiff City take on Cardiff University 3, a chance for our new players to make a name for themselves!

Cardiff City:

James Wilcox – 2
Jack Mitchell – 2
Alec Care – 1
Ian Russell – 1
Lenneke van der Linden – 2
Julie Prosser – 1
Zoe Rose – 1
Alice Hunter – 1
