Cardiff City Cyclones welcomed back their Welsh players back from the Korfball World Championships with a win over a spirited and well organised university first team

Captain Ruth Campbell started in first attack with Zoe Rose, Ian O’Sullivan and Chris Gubby. Ramzi Barbir, Max Lloyd, Julie Prosser lined up in first defence with the newly named Susan Jones.

Cyclones started off the scoring with a long shot from Gubby after some well organised attacks. Uni responded almost immediately with a middle distance shot. Prosser and Jones scored a running in shot and long shot respectively to give Cyclones some breathing space.

Uni were attacking well but Cyclones were able play with patience and soon opened up a four goal advantage with goals from Rose and O’Sullivan. In the other section, everyone was working well for each other with strong passing and good rotation of the post. Prosser earned herself a penalty which Barbir was able to convert and Jones soon added to the score with her second long shot of the game.

The score crept up to 9-1 with a penalty and long shot from Campbell and then came the pass of the game – a strong and direct pass from Gubby in defence to Barbir who was hovering around the post and coolly slotted away the opportunity. Half time, 10-1 to Cyclones.

The second half ended up a more scrappy affair with Uni shutting down many Cyclones attacks and forcing some poor passing from the City team. Stuart Wood came on for Gubby with the score at 11-1 and Barbir added to the score sheet with a long shot before Uni doubled their score.

Some long periods of attacking from both sides followed without the desired effect with poor passing largely to blame. Rose scored another long shot followed by a drop off from Lloyd. Uni’s hard work soon paid off when they scored a well worked drop off shot.

The final score ended 17-4 with Campbell and Prosser adding to Cyclones score. Cyclones will be pleased with the result against a tough and well organised Uni team but will look to work on their passing and shot selection. Everyone on the Cyclones team would like to wish Uni good luck at the forthcoming Southerns tournament. A big thank you to Nick Wigley for refereeing.
