Meeting notes

Finances

Chris Woodhead (CW) shared an update on the club’s finances. The update is summarised as follows: the club’s outgoings are currently greater than its income from membership fees, meaning the club is relying on its reserve funds. Hence, either outgoings would need to be reduced or income increased. Increasing membership fees was not thought to be a suitable course of action. The possibility of moving training to a cheaper venue such as Caerphilly Leisure Centre was discussed; however, Caerphilly was thought by several people to be too far for people to travel. It was suggested that we look into the availability of sports halls in nearby schools.

There was a further suggestion that the club look into procuring funding from the Welsh Korfball Association (WKA).

CW emphasised the recruitment of more members as the ideal way to return the club to sustainable finances.

Recruitment

The group discussed the importance of recruiting new members and ideas on how to achieve this. It was emphasised that recruitment was crucial for both the financial sustainability of the club, and also to enable us to reliably field two teams for matches.

The club had not had a recruitment secretary throughout the 2024-25 season, and an appeal was made for a volunteer to take on this role to lead coordination of recruitment efforts. Aman agreed to take on the role and was co-opted into the committee as Recruitment Secretary. It was emphasised that support would be required from other club members.

Aman proposed that new starters be buddied up with coaches-in-training to teach them the basics. It was suggested this be put on the agenda for the Annual General Meeting (AGM).

There were suggestions of forming partnerships with Cardiff University or University of South Wales, which it was said could be discussed at a future Committee meeting.

Other ideas for boosting recruitment were the club having a presence at Park Run, using our banner to advertise the club, as well as in parks over the summer, when training is planned to be outdoors.

Social Media Secretary, Lydia, gave an update on the club’s reach on Instagram, which had significantly increased in the last month. It was suggested that new photos be taken for use on social media.

It was proposed that the club assess our success in recruitment over the next two months and discuss this at the Club’s AGM, which will be scheduled for June (date TBC). This would allow the club to have further discussions at the AGM regarding whether any changes, such as changes to training venues, would be required.

Summer training

Chris Roberts outlined the committee’s proposals for training over the summer months, when indoor training would be paused, as normal. The proposal was for training to be held in parks, such as those by Sophia Gardens, once a week, and for beach korfball to be held at Victoria Gardens volleyball courts fortnightly on Fridays. There was a lot of interest in attending beach korfball, so this would be taken forwards. It was suggested that training in the park would be held on Tuesdays, and that a rota would be drawn up to share responsibility for bringing posts.
