Cardiff arrived in Oxford in buoyant mood after an impressive performance in Bristol last time around, and it showed in the first game. After two thirds of the opening game, Cardiff were 3-3 with the eventual winners Oxford City 1. Not only that, the team was playing some excellent expansive attacking Korfball. Goals came from Terry, Ian Delbridge (guesting) and Cally. Unfortunately Oxford opened up their play and netted two more in the final third, which proved only their National League experience and nothing detrimental against City. Next up were Oxford's second string, which City dispatched with an impressive display. Again, solid attacking platforms were the basis of goals from Terry, Greg (2), Josh and Cally. For all the attacking merit, note must go to the defence, who never looked like conceding and deserved the clean sheet. A draw or win against Woking would secure 2nd place, but it was not to be. A frustrating 0-2 scoreline owed much to lady luck as anything. Cardiff played the game as they had before, but could simply not find the basket against a defence marshalled expertly by Cardiff old-boy Clive Minshull who had Terry in his pocket most the game. Matthews' game got worse when he bottled a crucial late pentaly. Again, credit at the other end, which defended strongly. Winning ways were soon restored against Exeter. The win looked comfortable till late, when Exeter mounted a strong comeback. However, City did hold out, and made a 5-4 victory look harder than it needed to be. Goals here from Josh, Greg, Rob (2) and a deserving Trish with a well taken finish. Last up were local (ish!) rivals Bristol. Greg, Rob, and Josh all netted to make a 3-3 score at the end. Penalties were the result, and again, City failed from under the basket, losing 3-2 (Rob and Cally the scorers), and it should be noted that Terry couldn't score a penalty if it was drunk at the end of a night club and desparate for a lumbering stubblehead from south London!!! A disappointing end to a good day, with City impressing all with their confident attacking play and stern defence. Impressive performances came from the ever more potent Cally, Rob in good scoring mood, and Greg (never mind Elaine!!), and the rapidly improving Kate, Trish and Rachel (who was notable without scoring). Special nod to Josh as well, who called the play right almost every time.
