Cardiff City at Horfield mini tournament

Cardiff City Squad
Ian O'Sullivan, Terry Matthews, Holly Sisley, Kat Smith, Harry Smyth, Zoe Gabica, Sukh Gill, Ceri Jones

Cardiff City made the short trip over the bridge this weekend for a hastily arranged seconds team tournament at Bristol Horfield. With 1st teamers Harry and Ceri bolstering a squad also containing Ian, Terry, Holly, Sukh, Kat and Zoe Cardiff could genuinely claim to have a development side in attendance.

First up were regional new boys Taunton. Taunton are full of bounce and willing running, but are going to need to learn a few more direct lines if they are to break open a city defence well marshalled at both ends. It was their over enthusiasm which played in City's hands. Taunton's boys especially a little over physical on the posts. Ceri and Harry converted a penalty at each end, with Harry also dropping a nice free pass from close. In free play, Ceri netted a runner from Kat, and at the other end, Zoe was able to turn the defence and net from a nice diagonal from Harry. The same move would also see Sukh go close. The final 5-0 scoreline started City off with a bang.

However, Cardiff didn't go unbeaten on the day as we then played the eventual winners. The Exeter / Bristol City combination was certainly more 1st team than anything else, and City can be pleased with how well they played against this strong side. Zoe continued her good finishing with a runner off Ian, while at the other end Ceri worked the ball in off Terry to net from close as opposition star Tony tried to rebound. Ian went close several times droppng off the back and Harry tormented Ian Dellbridge but to no avail, whilst at the other end the opposition strangled City out of the game. A little shot off the back and a couple of runners past the girls gave them 5. A late long shot from Ceri would drag a third back, but that ended the scoring.

The final game saw City back against genuine development opposition and back to winning ways. Horfield are much better than previous seasons but still no match for City's firepower. Strong girls limitted City's female influence, but that didn't stop the boys helping themselves to 8. Many of these were from Horfields indiscipline, as Ceri twice, Harry and Terry all profitted from the spot. In open play, Ian and Harry claimed runners, and Terry and Harry dropped in from the half way line.

Finishing 2nd behind the strong Bristol / Exeter side, City displayed some fine play all day. Ian looked very impressive in combination with Harry and unlucky not to profit more from good dropping off. Ceri and Terry were a good combination of brains and legs!! The girls were defensively sound all day, and were tactically impressive always dropping into the right 2-2 positions which gave City a good structure all day from which to attack off. Zoe claimed a brace and could have got more, while the rest were just lacking in a bit of real direct and aggressive attacking to get themselves on the scoresheet.
