Cardiff Dragons II vs Horfield II

Dragons Squad

Angharad, Helen, Ian, Aidan, James (c), Gwen, Amy, Steve, Matt, Josh

After the disappointment of defeat in the Cardiff derby, Dragons 2 faced Horfield in a top of the table clash, looking to make amends. With the second division’s top scorer, Joey, promoted to the firsts (rather against his will), Steve came in to make his debut. After a bright start, rewarded with Angharad’s goal, things began to go a little awry as Horfield equalised and then went ahead. The score remained 2-1 to the visitors for some time, with the Dragons defence often at full stretch, until Amy’s control of the post allowed Steve to score from long range. This goal proved the catalyst for the Dragons to seize control, with Ian and Helen combining well. First Helen collected and then fed Ian for a mid-range effort, then Ian’s burst through the defence won a penalty that Helen converted. Steve added a running-in shot to make it 5-2 at half-time.

If that score slightly flattered Dragons, who had been pressed hard by Horfield, in the second half the home team took full control. With James, Angharad, Helen and half-time sub Aidan impeccable in defence, the attack were able to put shot after shot up, with Amy and Gwen coming up with the ball time after time. Finally one had to drop, and it was Matt’s runner. The next 2 goals from Angharad and James followed in quick succession, before Gwen got the goal she deserved. With just over 10 minutes left, Josh replaced Matt and swiftly landed a runner from Amy’s feed. Aidan promptly scored with a long shot to complete a sequence of 10 unanswered goals for the Dragons. A nice move saw Horfield score with a pass over the top, but Dragons had the final word in the dying seconds of the match with Josh’s shot from the back of the court.

The final score of 12-3, deservedly sent Dragons 2 back to the top of the table. Another excellent team performance saw the goals well spread around. Thanks to Matt and Aidan for guesting for us, and to Dave for agreeing to ref.
