Exeter v Cardiff City

Cardiff City squad
James Frost, Josh Cockburn, Ceri Jones, Lee O'Sullivan, Katherine Smith, Zoe Gabica, Susie Williams, Kay Lewis

Facing an athletic but inexperienced Exeter team, City's seconds won a resounding victory, highlighting the strength in depth of the club, with only Ceri doubling up from the firsts.

In the first half, Cardiff were almost irresistible, with both ends moving the ball around well and with some very accurate finishing. An 8-1 half time lead was an accurate reflection of a half in which Cardiff were dominant in attack and defence, Exeter's only goal coming from a long shot.

In the second half, Cardiff eased off the pedal a little and tried to spread the goalscoring around. To great celebrations, Zoe managed to net her first goal for the club, and Katherine was unlucky not to do likewise. Perhaps one of the club doctors would like to provide some beta-blockers or something so she doesn't panic when in sight of the basket. Even slowing down, City still were comfortably the better team and ran out 13-3 winners.

James was a clear man of the match, grabbing 4 goals (and being unlucky to see a 5th ruled out) and showing off exactly what a simple game korfball can be. When his defender got too tight on him, he ran past him and scored; when his defender backed off, he nailed the long shots. Now if we can only get him to collect! Lee also had an excellent game at the other end, with only a couple of technical problems on his running-in shots preventing him from collecting a similar goal haul. Kay and Susie both were comfortable at this level and showed their ability to come into the first team, if needed. Zoe and Katherine are visibly improving by the match, and were excellent in defence and continue to look more threatening in attack. Ceri and Josh didn't really have to do much beyond organising their ends, but Ceri managed to contribute a couple of running shots, and Josh a wide selection of misplaced passes.

A mention must go to Exeter who kept their heads and spirits up throughout, which ensured an enjoyable game, and to Tony who has as good a reffing performance as is possible for someone who chalked off 5 goals for us.
