Cardiff University v Cardiff Dragons

Cardiff Dragons Squad
Sian Hunt, Ian O'Sullivan, Chris Gubby, Remco Broekhuiysen, Rob Davies, Kat Smith, Pamela Moffat, Donna Waitt

Wednesday's game was the first ever Cardiff Dragons match, but after a summer of training they still began it in the enviable position of being a much more experienced team than their opponents. This experience quickly showed as Rob beat his debutant marker to draw the switch and found Remco for the simple finish. Remco swiftly doubled his tally with a running-in shot, this time from Donna's feed.

The other end proved equally quick to get on the score sheet, utilising Pam's dominance in the collect. First she won a rebound before finding Chris free to make it 3-0, then next time dispensed with the pass and scored herself.

4-0 quickly became 5 as Rob again set up Remco, then Donna cleverly got round not having a feed by bouncing a ball off a Cardiff Uni player and scoring from the deflection.

Chris was escaping from his marker at will and a neat ball from Ian over the top allowed him to score the 7th. Moments later the two worked a carbon copy of the move. At this point Cardiff Uni finally got on the scoresheet through Craig, and though Remco responded with another runner, Jack's long shot meant the students had pulled back the gap to 9-2 by half time.

In the second half, the Uni team re-arranged defensively and managed to cut down the chances available to Dragons. But they couldn't stop the goals entirely, Chris got his 4th with another running in shot; Remco scored a penalty after Donna's shot was defended by a boy, and Rob and Kat both grabbed their first goals; Rob through a nicely-judged runner, and Kat with her usual 5 metre finish after she was first onto a loose ball.

The university responded as Jack nailed his second from way out, then Remco took his tally to 7, first rebounding his own shot and then notching his second penalty after Rob was fouled - again! The final score was 15-3, with the uni side showing good resilience and an excellent attitude despite having never played together as a team before. Dragons will be very satisfied with their display, particularly in the first half; and the way that contributions were shared around. Remco and Chris scored the bulk of the goals, but Sian and Pam were both dominant around the post, while the other players contributed both goals and several assists.

Thanks also to the officiating duo of Dave and Lee.
