Cardiff City Seconds began this tournament with an undefeated record, having never played a game before, and they left with the record triumphantly intact.
Kevin, George and Gareth all got their first taste of competetive korfball, while we were indebted to Elaine's "definitely not my better half", Greg for keeping me out of the team... sorry, making up the numbers.
The first game saw an impressive 5-2 victory over Bristol City. Rachel was the main scorer, with 3 shots from around the basket. Elaine and James (from long range) completed the scoring.
If that victory was comfortable, the next was much tougher. Horfield took the lead and defended very tightly, with their women particularly strong. Goals from Gareth and Kevin were able to give Cardiff a 2-1 victory though. It might have been easier had we not squandered yet another penalty, this time Cally being the culprit.
With Exeter having recorded a draw and a win in their first two games, their game with Cardiff became the tournament decider. Again, Cardiff went behind early, but another long shot from James and a goal from Greg meant that at 2-2 Cardiff were holding on for the draw that would clinch the tournament. Then Exeter's star player Tony Fripps gave the ball away in defence to Kevin who made no mistake with the simple shot. 3-2 was the final scoreline.
All of City's players contributed to our triumph, and in terms of shooting, passing and catching skills we were clearly the best team there. At times we were lacking in movement and positioning, and these are the areas that will have to be improved upon to maintain the fearsome reputation that Cardiff City Seconds currently enjoy.
Some people had to leave immediately after the tournament, so Rachel, Cally, Gareth, George and myself were able to enjoy our victory chocolates by ourselves, minus a few that we magnanimously donated to Exeter. The social was enlivened by me dropping most of the chocolate wrappers on the floor by trying to read the sign on the base "Do not read while lid is open", and by discussion of George's upcoming date.
Postscript. Apparently it went "very well". Much like the rest of the day then.
