For the first time Cardiff city entered the fray of the BKA cup, and were proud hosts of a 1st round tournament against Supernova and Nomads 2, with only one to progress. With lady luck deserting us, causing three players to drop out and catching Midge in traffic, City faced up the stern test of Nomads 2 with 7 fired up players and a vocal home crowd. The first 10 minutes were a tribute to City's resolve. A determined back line and an energetic front line kept the score to 0-1 before we were able to add Midge to the ranks. It took 5 more minutes of Nomads pressure before they could score a second and push the score to 0-2. However, Ceri's searing pace saw him claim a runner in his first attack to pull one back. Further late pressure yielded nothing, and half time came at a tense 1-3. The second half saw Nomads come out with their foot down, and the step up in gear did yield another goal, not before Susan pulled one back with a drop off from behind the post. However, this is where Nomads did stretch the game away from City. A quick two-goal salvo mid way effectively killed the game, but not before Ceri added another late on to close the game down at 3-6. Against an opposition of this quality, City can be very proud of the performance they put in. Outstanding defence was just not quite matched up at the sharp end, where the drilled effectiveness of the London outfit was just too good. With Nomads 2 sealing the event with a win over Supernova, City faced up to the team from West London with hopes of a top class scalp. However, the dream was not quite there. Sterling defending again kept them out for long periods of the game, and it was obvious that City's aggressive pressure was unsettling the opposition. Harry's booming long shot and short efforts from Midge and the opportunist Dave were no match for tired legs and a lack of replacements. Through no lack of application and effort, City visibly tired late on, and the game opened up for Supernova, who may feel flattered by the eventual 11-3 scoreline. Considering the supposed gulf in quality between the capital and the principality, City will have given a good account of themselves and Nomads just a little scare. There is Korfball out in the regions and some good examples of it were seen in Cardiff this morning.
