The opening fixture of the season saw Cardiff City travel across the Severn to take on Bristol City.
A much improved Bristol city gave Cardiff a lesson in team progress as they overturned last year's loss to record a comfortable 14-11 home victory. Cardiff got off to a bright start, converting their first two attacks from short range, and looking solid in defence. Every effort from Cardiff was well matched by the Bristol long range shooting, and after a high scoring first half Cardiff led 7-5.
The second half started with two new faces on the pitch for Bristol, and the substitutions certainly helped. Tiring Cardiff defenders struggled to keep pace with the fresher Bristol players and Cardiff's lead soon evaporated. Goals were harder to come by, and at the final whistle we had been overcome 14-11. Plus points were an encouraging debut from new comer Kate Saunders, and some good long shooting from Elaine Huntchings. 5 players were on the scoresheet, but it wasn't enough to contain an excellent second half effort from Bristol.
